Blind Assessment
A darkish roast turns the pungent, slightly earth-toned fruit toward grapefruit and butterscotch in the aroma. In the cup round, resonant acidity, lightly syrupy mouthfeel. The pungent, butterscotch-like fruit takes on clear floral and chocolate complications that strengthen in the finish. Flavor outlasts a very mild astringency in the long.
Notes
Certified organically grown and Fair Trade, meaning it was purchased from small-holding farmers at a "fair" or economically sustainable price. This sample consists entirely of peaberries, a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated during grading. This Tanzania peaberry is produced by small-holding growers in the Ruvuma growing region, near Lake Nyasa in southwestern Tanzania. Based in the Catskill Mountains of New York, La Bean Coffee is a small roasting company that serves wholesale and Internet retail customers with fresh roasted coffee and focuses its business practices on social and philanthropic goals of sustainability and fairness. Who Should Drink It
A pleasing variation on the deep, pungent fruit we associate with moderately dark-roasted Sumatras and Papua New Guineas.
