Complex, unorthodox. Lily-like flowers, tangerine, slightly scorchy cedar, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco in aroma and cup. Brisk, bittersweet acidity; full, syrupy mouthfeel. Tangerine and chocolate persist in a round, gently resonant finish.

Notes

Coffee was first planted in Indonesia (in Java) in 1696. The coffee comprising this sample is purportedly the progeny of a later importation of coffee seed to Indonesia in about 1928, supposedly directly from Ethiopia (previously Abyssinia). To our eye and palate, this coffee does not much resemble Ethiopian cultivars in bean shape or cup profile, though it is a subtly unusual cup, especially in respect to a lush, lily-like floral note. Like all traditional Sumatras, it is a wet-hulled coffee, which process most likely gives it its underlying cedary, bittersweet, pipe-tobacco-like character.
