Blind Assessment
Spicy, sweet-savory. Brazil nut, rosemary, dark chocolate, oak, a hint of honeysuckle in aroma and cup. Round, quiet acidity; full, syrupy mouthfeel. Flavor consolidates around bitter nut and sweet chocolate in the finish.
Notes
Maragogipe (Maragojipe in Spanish; also spelled Maragogype) is a variety of Arabica first discovered growing near the Brazilian town of the same name. It is a seldom-grown variety that produces enormous beans. This particular sample consists entirely of peaberries, a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated during grading. Dragonfly Coffee is a Boulder, Colorado-based micro-roaster that produces high-quality coffees and supports worthy causes. Who Should Drink It
Those aficionados interested in an extremely unusual coffee: The huge-beaned Maragogipe variety is rare enough; the peaberry grade of a Maragogipe is rarer still.
