Blind Assessment
Evaluated at proportions of 5 grams of instant coffee powder mixed with 8.5 ounces (250 ml) of hot water. Mainly burned, with some crisp liveliness. Heavily scorched fir with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon in aroma and cup. Bitter and burned in structure, with a suggestion of sweetness. Light and lean in mouthfeel. Dry and roasty-wood-toned in the finish, with faint suggestions of chocolate and vanilla.
Notes
This coffee was reviewed for a tasting of soluble or “instant” coffees for Coffee Review’s September 2018 tasting report. The KANU line is generally considered one of Korea’s premium instant coffees. More information on KANU in English can be found at modernseoul.org/2013/07/29/kanu-and-looka-premium-korean-instant-coffees/.
Bottom Line
An ultra-dark French roast in instant format that manages to maintain some hints of flavor, while avoiding the sullen burned-building character of many dark- or ultra-dark-roasted instants.
