Blind Assessment
Intense cedar tone dominates the aroma. Silky mouthfeel and soft flavors that hint at cherry-chocolate, malt and walnut. Wood-toned chocolate in the softly astringent finish.
Notes
Maragogipe (sometimes Maragogype) is a variety of Arabica first discovered growing near the Brazilian town of the same name. It is a seldom-grown variety that produces enormous beans. Paradoxically, these enormous beans tend to produce a cup rather delicate in sensory profile, as here. This sample consists entirely of peaberries, a kind of bean that results when the coffee fruit develops only a single, oval bean rather than the usual pair of flat-sided beans. Peaberries produce a somewhat different (often better) cup than normal beans from the same crop, from which they may or may not be separated during grading. Located in Maine, Coffee By Design is a retail and wholesale micro roaster with three coffeehouses in Portland and Freeport and a roastery that includes a coffee bar. Committed to offering outstanding small batch, hand-roasted coffees that are 100% traceable. Visit www.coffeebydesign.com or call 877-887-5282 for more information.
Who Should Drink It
An opportunity to sample a specially graded, unique variety of arabica with a rather unusual malty, woody character.
