Blind Assessment
Woody and vaguely sweet with a background salty mildew that could perhaps be charitably interpreted as spice. Flat with no brightness whatsoever; lean mouthfeel. The finish is sweet but empty and astringent. As the cup cools the musty, mildewy sharpness intensifies. Owing to the intensity of the mildewy taint we deducted three points from our already low rating.
Notes
Purchased pre-ground in a sealed 10.3-ounce can at a Safeway supermarket in northern California; 60 cents per dry ounce. All indications suggest that this blend contains a significant percentage of coffees of the Robusta species. Folgers is a 160-year old coffee brand founded in San Francisco, acquired in 1963 by Procter & Gamble, and sold in 2008 to the J.M. Smucker company. Visit
Who Should Drink It
Only masochists. Our November 2011 supermarket sampling suggests better Robusta-heavy nationally branded canned blends are available at a comparable price.
