Blind Assessment
Evaluated at proportions of 5 grams of instant coffee powder mixed with 8.5 ounces (250 ml) of hot water. Cloyingly sweet and definitively burned. Salted caramel, burned building, some cinnamon and floral top notes in aroma and cup. The structure is salty and bitter; the mouthfeel lean and watery. Hints of flavor fade in a finish that simply tastes burned.
Notes
This coffee was reviewed for a tasting of soluble or “instant”coffees for Coffee Review’s September 2018 tasting report. This is an instant Via version of the medium- (actually dark-) roasted Colombia, a Starbucks standby. Based on our reading of the cup, this Via Colombia intimated taints in the green coffee and clumsiness in the roast that are not typical of Starbucks’ whole-bean Colombia offerings. Visit www.starbucks.com for more information.
Bottom Line
Not much survives the dark roast and the solubilizing, and what does is not particularly pleasing.
